Fishing
Charters split three ways. Deep-sea trips run on 40 to 60 ft sport yachts taking 8 to 15 people, trolling the drop-off where the Caicos plateau falls away into thousands of feet of Atlantic. Reef and bottom fishing is the family option: light rods, bait, snapper and grouper, and it pairs easily with a snorkel stop. Bonefishing happens on the shallow flats and creeks of Provo, North, Middle and East Caicos from small skiffs, usually two to four anglers, with permit, tarpon and barracuda possible.
Nearly every trip is a private charter. Licences, tackle, drinks and snacks are normally included, with lunch on six and eight-hour days, and most boats let you keep the edible catch, cleaned and filleted. On Provo the fleet works mainly out of South Bank, Turtle Cove and Blue Haven marinas. Book four to seven days out for offshore; bonefishing needs more notice because there are fewer guides.
Licences: every visitor aged 16 and over aboard a boat carrying fishing gear needs one, whether fishing or not. One day costs $10 and 30 days $30 from government offices ($10 to 15 and $30 to 35 from marinas and businesses); annual licences at $60 are for residents only. Fishing without one carries a fine of up to $50,000 and 12 months' imprisonment. Fishing inside any national park or nature reserve is prohibited.
